Safety Guidelines
A) Run Against Traffic and on Proper Surfaces - Runners are to run on the left shoulder of all roads (against traffic), use sidewalks or trails when available, unless signs or maps direct otherwise.
B) Be Aware of Traffic and Obey Traffic Laws - Runners are to understand that they do not have exclusive use of the roadway and are required to obey all traffic laws. This includes stopping at traffic lights and stop signs.
C) Personal Music Devices and Headphones - The use of personal music devices with headphones while running is strongly discouraged. If you still choose to use them, you do so at your own risk and must meet the following requirements:
• You must be able to hear traffic
• Be aware of the sounds around you
• When running you should be able to hear your own footsteps. If you can’t, your volume is too high.
D) Additional Safety Devices - Runners can carry additional safety devices while running their legs. These may include the following items:
- Whistle
- Self-defense spray (check with local laws & guidelines in your area for what is approved)
- Personal safety wearables
E) Runners on course during dark hours - ALL runners must wear night gear during dark hours – reflective vest, headlamp (or flashlight) and blinking LED tail light. We will have extra vests, flashlights, and blinking LED tail lights in the event that you forgot to bring them.
It is important to stress that roads are not closed while you are running and following these rules are for the safety of all runners.
